The Years Between When and Whether
Ten years of waiting, and the word that was never the same word.
After reading the poem
Two people can appear to be waiting for the same future while answering different questions.
The speaker believes the relationship is moving toward commitment; the uncertainty seems to be about timing. When? That reading makes waiting feel productive, each year preparation instead of evidence.
Later, another possibility becomes visible: one person has been asking when, while the other has never resolved whether. That difference changes what the earlier years meant. The absence of a decision had been giving information all along; the speaker simply did not yet have the language needed to read it.
What became visible
Intellectual value
How uncertainty gets misread in long relationships: waiting feels like movement when neither person has agreed on the destination. A single word pair, when and whether, reorganizes years of experience.
