Love & Becoming
The Love That Turned Me Toward the Horizon
On the loves that arrive to change our direction
I came to see you one last time
because you wanted to understand
how something that had once felt so natural
had come to its quiet end.
You spoke softly, almost apologetically,
as if you were trying to name a feeling
that had already drifted beyond language.
You said you were no longer happy.
That somewhere along the way,
our paths had begun to lean
toward different futures.
I listened.
I told you I understood.
And I did.
Though beneath my calm,
I felt a tender ache move through me —
the subtle, unmistakable shift
of a life being asked to change.
Still, I opened my hands
and let you go.
There was no bitterness between us.
No accusations.
No need to diminish what we had shared.
Only the quiet sadness
of two people who had loved sincerely,
and who understood that love alone
does not always ask us to stay.
After that day,
I never saw you again.
For a long time,
I thought of you as someone I had lost.
A brief and beautiful chapter
I wished had lasted longer.
But memory has a way
of softening what once felt sharp,
until you can finally see
the deeper shape of what occurred.
You were never meant to be
the place where my story ended.
You were the gentle turning.
The unseen hinge
that turned my face toward the horizon.
You came into my life
to show me a wider measure of love,
and a larger vision
of who I might become.
And when your part in my story was complete,
you left quietly,
carrying with you a season
I will always remember with tenderness.
Now, when I think of you,
I do not think of heartbreak.
I think of gratitude.
Of a love that stayed only long enough
to alter the direction of my life.
Some people do not remain forever.
They pass through us like a beautiful season,
and leave us facing gently
toward the life we were always meant to live.
