We Rise as One
A people, unbroken
We were never separate —
only scattered by history,
like embers the wind carried
without ever extinguishing.
The same earth formed us —
dark with memory,
alive with the footsteps
of those who refused to disappear.
The same rivers
spoke us into being
before we had names for ourselves,
before we understood
what it meant
to lose everything
and still remain whole.
We come from a land
the world could not erase.
A land
that carried unspeakable sorrow
without surrendering
its tenderness.
A land
that taught its children
how to begin again
with nothing
but each other.
We are the Cambodian people.
Bound not only by blood,
but by survival —
by the inheritance
of beginning again.
Because even when history
tried to break our language,
our families,
our future —
something in us
remained unbroken.
It lived
in whispered prayers,
in tired hands that never stopped working,
in mothers who carried entire worlds
inside their sacrifice,
in fathers who stood between fear
and the people they loved.
We are descendants
of endurance.
And still —
we did not become bitterness.
We became resilience.
We became the people
who gather before being asked,
who carry one another
so no one must fall alone.
This is our power:
not that we never suffered —
but that suffering
never emptied our humanity.
Across oceans,
across generations,
across every distance meant to divide us —
we have remained
an unbroken people.
And when the storms return —
we do not disappear into fear.
We gather.
We steady one another.
We remember who we are.
Because we were never meant
to survive as fragments.
We are the Cambodian people —
a memory that does not fade,
a fire that does not go out,
a belonging no border can undo.
And when we rise —
we rise with every ancestor beside us,
every voice history tried to silence,
every child still learning
the meaning of home.
We rise carrying memory.
We rise carrying one another.
We rise carrying the future.
Until there is no distance left between us —
only one people,
one heartbeat,
one unbroken becoming —
rising,
as we always have —
as one.
