Nothing Is Ever Set Down
A mortgage notice beside a plate, and the law of motion it revealed.
After reading the poem
Responsibility does not disappear when one person stops carrying it.
This poem follows a household where burdens seem to belong to no one until they quietly land with the person most willing to keep things from falling apart. Bills still need paying. Children still need stability. Decisions still need making. A responsibility refused by one person does not vanish; it changes location.
At first the speaker reads the imbalance as bad timing or hard circumstances. Only later does she see a system: one person’s freedom made possible by another’s absorption. Like water, responsibility settles wherever it can.
What became visible
Intellectual value
A model for invisible labor as transferred responsibility. It reaches well beyond marriage, into families, workplaces, caregiving, and institutions: wherever someone’s freedom depends on work that has only become less visible.
