Love & Loss

Fingerprints on the Vanishing

Love that withdrew in increments

3 min readNadia Luong

We did not break

all at once.

Our ending began

the way a shoreline learns

the tide has been withdrawing

for hours.

I brought you

the small, trembling artifacts

of my life —

a hope,

a fear,

a fragment of wonder —

and watched them pass through you

untouched.

You nodded,

but your listening

had become a form of weather:

present in appearance,

already elsewhere in intention.

Your body remained,

but your spirit

had begun to loosen its roots.

At first,

I translated your distance

into kinder dialects.

Fatigue.

Confusion.

A season of private storms.

But love,

when it is whole,

does not require

forensic reconstruction.

It does not ask one heart

to become both witness and detective,

searching for fingerprints

on the vanishing.

And then I understood:

you were not trying to stay.

You were rehearsing your departure

in increments too small

to name aloud.

So I did

what you could not.

I spoke the ending

your silence

had been drafting for months.

Not because I loved you less,

but because I could no longer

offer my whole heart

to someone

already living

in a future without me.

The deepest loneliness

is not being alone.

It is offering your interior world

to someone

who can no longer receive it.

So I chose

the cleaner pain.

And somewhere beyond this ending,

there is a love

that will stay

with its whole heart.
