Love & Parenthood
What I Watched You Become
A partner becoming a parent
When we first met,
I knew the shape of your laughter.
The look you gave me
when you were trying not to smile.
The stories you carried.
I thought I knew you completely.
Then we had children.
And I discovered
there were parts of you
I had never met before.
I watched you walk the hallway
at three in the morning
with a sleeping baby on your shoulder.
Watched you learn the difference
between hungry cries
and tired ones.
Watched you leave for work exhausted
because morning still came
whether we were ready for it or not.
Somewhere along the way,
we became the only two people
who understand certain stories.
The look across the dinner table
when one child insists
they definitely did not do it.
The laugh we are both trying to hide
when another says something
that should never have been said out loud.
The nicknames.
The family legends.
The moments no one else
would ever find as funny as we do.
And then there were the things
I never expected to notice.
The patience.
The way you kneel down
to listen instead of rushing.
The way our children still look for you
when they are hurt.
Still trust
that you will come.
I loved you
when you became my husband.
But there is another love
that arrived later.
The kind that comes
from watching someone
give their time,
their sleep,
their whole heart
to their children
without ever asking for credit.
That is what I watched you become.
And somehow,
through all these years,
it made me love you more.
